What to wear?

Before you get your karate suit (gi) just wear comfortable sports clothes. You will need to remove socks, shoes and any jewellery and tie long hair back. If you have jewellery which cannot be removed, please make sure it is covered with a plaster or tape.

If you are a beginner, we will ask for your height on our membership form in the first class so we can order you the right sized gi - it won’t be long until you are trying on your white pyjamas!

KUGB licence

We are affiliated to the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB). To keep training at our club after the first few sessions you will need to have a KUGB licence, as this is important for insurance and you will also need one for your gradings! The licence also allows you to train at KUGB courses.

You can get a licence here.

£30 for an adult
£25 for under 16s

Training fees

We are a ‘not for profit’ club and our instructors teach on a voluntary unpaid basis, so training fees are to cover our running costs. For those new to karate it is £30 for a child (age 6-16) and £40 for an adult. This covers 1 month of lessons (up to 3 per week), a gi (the white pyjamas!) and white belt.

For those who have already graded in karate it is £4 a class for under 16s / £6 for adults in cash, or £30/£40 per month by direct debit

If you have a Bluelight card or have a family with multiple children wanting to train we have additional discounts - just ask.

FAQs

  • You can contact us by email, phone or Facebook, or just turn up a little early to a session. We will ask you to fill out a simple membership form with basic details before you can get started. If you are a beginner we will also ask your height so we can order your gi (karate suit)!

  • We accept children from age 6 and above.

  • The first couple of classes are some of the most intense, requiring close instruction to ensure our beginners develop correct technique and good habits from the very start. Therefore we charge from class number one. If you are not sure if it is for you, you are very welcome to watch a class for free before committing to the month. If you want to try a one off class it is £10 - if you want to continue you can then 'top up' to the monthly deal at the end of the session.

  • The more the better! But we recommend a minimum of twice a week, so that you can build on your learning and progress.

  • Been out of training for a while and tempted to return? Welcome! We would encourage you to dust off your gi and wear the belt of your grade, even if you feel a bit rusty don't worry! Just let the Sensei know at the start of the class if you've not trained for a while :)
