50th year anniversary dinner
Club members swapped their white pyjamas for more formal attire, as they gathered to celebrate Rhyl & Prestatyn SKC’s 50th Anniversary. Following drinks in the bar of the Faenol Fawr, a delicious 3 course dinner was enjoyed by all in the beautiful setting of the hotel’s Tudor room. Present were those who had been there in the club’s earliest days, including Richard Poole, Russell Owen, Mike Curtis, Garth Cobley and Ian Hutchinson. Russell was thanked for his incredible commitment to the club - training, competing and teaching over the full 50 year period.
Our thanks to Richard Poole, Russell Owen, Steve Peters and (especially) Katie Owen for organising the evening.

Rhyl & Prestatyn @ the European Shotokan Karate-do Association Championships in Portugal!
After being selected to represent Wales in both kumite and kata, Francis travelled to Gondomar, Porto in Portugal to compete at the European Shotokan Karate-do Assocation (ESKA) annual championships which took place between 22.11.2024-24.11.2024. At 16 years old, Francis was eligible to compete in both the Cadet (16-18 yrs) and Junior (19-20 yrs) categories.
On the first day of the competition Francis performed a powerful and sharp Heian Sandan to beat his opponent and move into the second round. Here his performance of Jion was also strong and spirited, but in a split decision the flags went against him. In kumite he came up against Lithuania. Francis dominated the area and scored early with a well timed jodan punch. Unfortunately his opponent equalised and it went to enchusen - a ‘sudden death’ extension lasting up to 1 minute, where the first to score wins. Neither side, however, succeeded and at the end of time the decision went the other way.
The second day Francis performed kata Tekki shodan, where he demonstrated excellent use of kibadachi but did not progress to the next round. In the kumite Francis met a competitor from the Czech Republic. Another gutsy performance but the long reaching techniques of his opponent reached target and he went out to the Czech.
Francis was not alone at ESKA. He was supported by his father, Matthew, who also trains in the club, as well as his mother and sister. Senseis Richard and Tegwen also played key roles. Richard is President of ESKA and runs the competion along with members of the ESKA Executive Committee, as well as being a referee and area manager. Tegwen is a member of the ESKA Medical commission, coordinating the first aid and ensuring the local medical team operates well within the competition set up.
Rhyl & Prestatyn hosts the KUGB Brown & Blackbelt training & Dan grading
27.10.2024
Rhyl & Prestatyn Shotokan Karate Club welcomed karateka from all over England and Wales, as they travelled to train with Sensei Billy Higgins (8th Dan) and Sensei Frank Brennan (8th dan).
The classes covered a range of kihon (basic technique), kumite (sparring), kata (set form) and bunkai (the application of kata techniques). Following the training there was a grading for those going for shodan and nidan - the first and second grades of black belt. Members of the Rhyl & Prestatyn dojo were present at both sessions - as pictured.
Competition success for Francis
26.10.2024
Francis competed in the KUGB Youth Championships and the KUGB student championships in both kata and kumite. He narrowly missed out on the kata final and placed equal third in the 16-17 years kumite in the Youth Champs earning a bronze medal!
Congratulations to Francis, and many thanks to Sensei Richard and Dad Mathew for supporting him both on the run up to the competition and on the day!

Francis selected to represent Wales in Europe!
17.09.2024
Congratulations to Francis Curtis, 2nd dan, who has been selected to represent KUGB Wales in both kumite and kata at the European Shotokan Karate-do Championships. The competition will take place in Porto, Portugal, 23rd - 25th November.
This achievement comes after many months of hard training with the KUGB Welsh squad, and after placing 3rd in individual kumite at the Shotokan Cup. Francis now has a tough 2 months of preparation ahead of him, with an intense training programme planned at Rhyl & Prestatyn as well as sessions with the Welsh squad and the KUGB central region kumite development squad.
Francis is a popular club member and instructor and is the third generation of his family to train at Rhyl & Prestatyn - his grandfather, Michael, was a previous member and his father, Matthew, trains alongside him.
